Description
Pappy Van Winkle Complete Lineup is produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky through a partnership with the Van Winkle family that began in 2002. The collection consists of six expressions, including five Kentucky straight bourbons and one Kentucky straight rye whiskey, each aged for different periods ranging from 10 to 23 years.
The collection includes Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon aged 10 years at 107 proof, Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon aged 12 years at 90.4 proof, Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye aged 13 years at 95.6 proof, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon aged 15 years at 107 proof, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon aged 20 years at 90.4 proof, and Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon aged 23 years at 95.6 proof. Only three expressions bear the Pappy Van Winkle name, specifically the 15, 20, and 23 year aged bourbons.
All expressions use a wheated bourbon recipe with a mash bill containing a minimum of 51% corn, plus malted barley and wheat instead of rye. The spirits are crafted using limestone-rich Kentucky water and a proprietary yeast strain.
Following double distillation, the whiskeys are aged in charred American oak barrels stored on lower warehouse floors to promote slower and more consistent aging through seasonal temperature changes. The 13 year rye represents one of the oldest rye whiskeys available on the market, while the 15 year bourbon is bottled at barrel proof.
Tasting profiles vary across the collection. The 10 year expression offers baking spices, wood, and alcohol notes, while the 12 year provides a smoother character with less alcohol presence. The 15 year presents caramel and vanilla notes. The 20 year bourbon features citrus zest, sherry notes, dried fruits, vanilla, and a long finish with balanced wood tannins and fruity sweetness.
The 23 year expression is characterized by woody and tannic qualities with dark chocolate, cherries, and tobacco notes. The 13 year rye offers tobacco, honey, toffee, and fruit with subdued rye spiciness.
The Van Winkle collection produces approximately 7,000 cases annually across all expressions, with releases typically occurring from late October through November. Each bottle is sourced through licensed suppliers to ensure authenticity.
These whiskeys are commonly enjoyed neat to appreciate their aging characteristics and complex flavor profiles.
