Description
Michter’s US*1 Original Sour Mash Whiskey is produced in Kentucky using whiskey sourced from a Kentucky distillery. The whiskey is crafted through the sour mash process, where remaining liquid from the previous distillation is added to the mash for the next batch. This method contributes to consistency and character development across batches.
The whiskey utilizes a unique grain selection that includes a significant amount of rye and less than 51% corn. Due to this grain composition, the whiskey does not meet the legal requirements for bourbon classification and is designated as American whiskey. The spirit is aged in fire-charred new American white oak barrels and carries no age statement.
The whiskey presents a copper color. On the nose, butterscotch, ripe pears, apples, white pepper, oak, marshmallows, vanilla, toffee, cinnamon, and clove are present. The palate offers caramel corn, apples, butterscotch, vanilla, caramel, toffee, coffee cake, cherry, raspberry, and cinnamon with a smooth texture. The finish is medium to medium-long with oak, pepper spice, rye spice, and dryness.
Michter’s US*1 Original Sour Mash Whiskey returned to market in 2012 after disappearing in 1989. The expression was the most popular Michter’s product during the 1970s and 1980s. In 2019, the whiskey was named Whisky Of The Year by The Whisky Exchange, becoming the first whiskey made in the United States to receive this recognition.
This whiskey is commonly enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails.
