Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask

Description

The Macallan 12 Year Old is produced at The Macallan Distillery in Craigellachie, Moray, located in the Speyside region of northeast Scotland. Established in 1824 by Alexander Reid, the distillery sits on the banks of the River Spey and derives its name from the Gaelic words “magh” meaning fertile ground and “allan” referring to a local stream.

The distillery operates 36 copper pot stills, including characteristically small spirit stills that maximize copper contact during distillation.

The whisky is crafted from 100% malted Scottish barley using traditional pot still distillation with water sourced from the River Spey. The spirit is unpeated and contains no added flavorings or coloring.

The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak expression is matured exclusively for a minimum of 12 years in hand-picked Oloroso sherry-seasoned European oak casks sourced from Jerez, Spain. The casks are selected under the oversight of the Master of Wood and remain undisturbed throughout the maturation period in warehouses on Speyside.

The whisky presents a rich gold to deep amber color derived naturally from cask maturation. On the nose, complex notes of vanilla, dried fruits, subtle sherry sweetness, oak influence, and ginger are present.

The palate is smooth and medium-balanced with fruit, oak, and spice, featuring hints of sultanas, fresh apple blossom, citrus, including marmalade and orange zest, chocolate, fudge, caramel, and vanilla. The finish is long with sweet dried fruits, oak, and spice, offering lingering warmth with notes of woody spice, nutmeg, oranges, and raisins.

The Macallan 12 Year Old is bottled with a natural cork closure and foil capsule. The distillery opened a new production facility in 2019, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, which houses the expanded distillation capacity while maintaining traditional production methods. The Macallan is owned by the Edrington Group and represents one of the top-selling single malt Scotch whiskies globally.

This whisky is commonly enjoyed neat or with a small amount of water to open the flavor profile.
