Description
Glenfiddich 40 Year Old Rare Collection is produced at the Glenfiddich Distillery in Speyside, Scotland. The distillery is operated by William Grant & Sons and utilizes a distinctive production method known as remnant vatting.
This process involves carrying over remnants of the previous 40 Year Old bottling and marrying them with casks selected by the Malt Master for each subsequent release, inspired by the solera system used in sherry production.
The whisky is aged for 40 years in oak casks matured in Glenfiddich warehouses. The Malt Master handpicks the oldest casks for vatting, with each annual release combining casks that contribute unique character to the final expression. The production yields fewer than 1,000 bottles released worldwide per year, with each bottle individually numbered.
The whisky presents a dark mahogany color. On the nose, dried fruits, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, ripe black cherries, gentle wood smoke, polished leather, and cloves are present. The palate is smooth and offers intense dried fruit, rich fruitcake, dates, raisins, stewed apples, dry oaky notes, bitter chocolate, and faint peat. The finish is long lasting and complex.
Glenfiddich 40 Year Old Rare Collection is presented in a crystal decanter with hand-stitched calf leather wrapping. Each release includes a leather-bound book containing certification hand-signed by the distillery’s longest-serving craftsmen.
Various releases feature different packaging elements, including oak presentation cases and sculptural jesmonite containers featuring grooves with green glass and copper elements. This whisky is commonly enjoyed neat to appreciate its complexity and extended aging characteristics.
