Description
Bunnahabhain 40 Year Old is produced at the Bunnahabhain Distillery on the Isle of Islay, Scotland. Established in 1881 by William Robertson with William and James Greenlees, the distillery distinguishes itself from other Islay producers through its use of unpeated malted barley.
The distillery sources pure spring water from underground sources away from peaty moorlands, contributing to its distinctive character. The whisky is distilled in the tallest pear-shaped stills on Islay, featuring long swan necks that yield a lighter and more delicate spirit.
The 40 Year Old expression represents a combination of casks discovered in the distillery warehouse and vatted together after four decades of maturation in sherry casks. The whisky is bottled at 41.9% ABV without chill filtration and contains no added coloring.
The spirit presents a copper appearance. On the nose, sweet oak, hazelnut, citrus peat, chocolate, light smokiness, banana, berries, creamy toffee, vanilla, mango, guava, dark berries, and chocolate covered almonds are present. The palate is rich and complex with heather honey, ginger chocolate, sweet fruits, sweet malt, creamy caramel, ripe pineapple, toasted nuts, tropical fruit, and vanilla-toffee and caramel.
The finish is long, sweet, and deeply fruity with light spice, nutty characteristics, and a hint of sea salt.Bunnahabhain 40 Year Old represents the distillery’s unpeated style, setting it apart from the heavily peated whiskies typically associated with Islay. The distillery has been owned by Distell of South Africa since 2014.
This whisky is commonly enjoyed neat to appreciate the complexity developed over four decades of maturation.
