Description
Brora 40 Year Old 200th Anniversary is produced at the Brora Distillery in the Highlands of Scotland. This expression was released in 2019 to celebrate the distillery’s 200th anniversary, commemorating its founding in 1819. The whisky was distilled in 1978 during a period when the distillery produced heavily peated whisky using northern Highland barley.
The spirit was aged for 40 years before bottling in 2019. The maturation took place in a vatting of 12 refill American oak hogsheads. The whisky is bottled at 49.2% ABV and represents a limited release of 1,819 bottles worldwide, with the production number referencing the distillery’s founding year. Each bottle is individually numbered.
On the nose, rich sweet fruit, ripe figs, and fire and brimstone are present. The palate offers a smooth and lightly waxy texture with powerful, rich, darkly sweet notes that transition to savoury characteristics before becoming smoky. The finish is long and lingering with plumes of peat smoke.
The Brora Distillery originally opened in 1819 and was closed in 1983 before being restored and reopened by Diageo in 2021. The 1978 distillation occurred during an era when Brora produced heavily peated whisky to address supply needs. This 200th Anniversary release was issued ahead of the distillery’s reopening, representing whisky from the historic production period.
The whisky is presented with collectible packaging befitting the anniversary release, with each bottle individually numbered and accompanied by premium presentation elements. This whisky is commonly enjoyed neat to appreciate the character developed over four decades of maturation.
