Description

Benromach 40 Year Old represents the oldest expression from this family-owned Speyside distillery. Distilled in 1981 and laid down for four decades of maturation, this single malt Scotch whisky was bottled in 2021 as a limited release of 1,047 bottles.

The 2021 release marks the first batch in what has become an annual limited release series.This expression is matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry hogshead casks, allowing the spirit to develop rich character through extended contact with European oak previously used for sherry maturation.

The whisky is bottled at cask strength of 57.1% ABV, preserving the full intensity of flavors developed over 40 years. Benromach maintains traditional production methods, with the distillery team relying exclusively on their expertise and senses during the hand-made production process.

The whisky is non-chill filtered and presented in its natural colour without added colouring, displaying a deep amber hue that reflects the influence of four decades in sherry casks. On the nose, rich ginger and stewed fruit aromas emerge, followed by citrus, cinnamon, toffee, and beeswax polish.

The palate delivers intense Seville orange flavors alongside red apple and demerara sugar. The finish presents citrus zest with a touch of charred oak.Additional tasting characteristics noted include tobacco, brass polish, overripe bananas, dried figs, blackberries, and waxy notes on the nose.

The palate reveals tobacco leaves, black peppercorns, Seville oranges, tart cherries, cranberries, cold coffee, clove, worn leather, herbal tea, peppermint, and dark chocolate. The finish is medium in length with coffee, marmalade, herbal notes, and oak char.

Benromach 40 Year Old has received recognition at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, earning Best in Show and Double Gold awards. This Speyside single malt is bottled at 750 mL and is typically enjoyed neat or with a small amount of water to open the complex flavors developed through 40 years of maturation in first-fill Oloroso sherry hogshead casks.
