Description
Bowmore 15 Year Old is distilled at the Bowmore Distillery on the Isle of Islay, established in 1779 as the first licensed distillery to operate on the island.
This expression undergoes a dual maturation process, spending approximately 12 years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to European oak Oloroso sherry casks for its final three years of aging.
The distillery utilizes its own floor maltings for a portion of its barley, which is dried using peat smoke to create the signature Islay character.
Maturation takes place in the No. 1 Vaults, a historic maturation warehouse partially located below sea level on the shores of Loch Indaal, where the maritime environment influences the aging process.
The whisky is bottled at 43% ABV and presents a deep mahogany color. On the nose, dark chocolate and raisin aromas complement classic Bowmore smokiness, accompanied by dried figs, maple syrup, and subtle peat.
The palate offers cedar wood, treacle toffee, spiced fruitcake, roasted nuts, leather, and orange peel. The finish is warming and persistent, featuring sherry sweetness, earthy spice, and lingering smoke.
Bowmore 15 Year Old represents a balance between the peated Islay tradition and the influence of sherry cask maturation.
The combination of bourbon barrel aging and sherry finishing creates a layered profile that bridges lighter expressions and more heavily sherried malts within the distillery’s range.
This whisky is commonly enjoyed neat or with a small amount of water to open the flavor profile.
