Description
Port Charlotte 10 Year Old is distilled at the Bruichladdich Distillery on the Isle of Islay, Scotland. Established in 1881 and revived in 2001, the distillery produces this expression as a tribute to the historic Port Charlotte village and the former Lochindaal distillery that operated from 1829 to 1929. The whisky is crafted from 100% Scottish malted barley peated to 40 phenolic parts per million.
The spirit undergoes trickle distillation through tall, narrow-necked copper pot stills using Islay spring water. Following distillation, the whisky is matured for a minimum of 10 years in warehouses located at Port Charlotte in the historic Lochindaal distillery buildings. The cask composition consists of 65% first-fill American ex-bourbon whiskey casks, 10% second-fill American ex-bourbon whiskey casks, and 25% second-fill French ex-wine casks.
The whisky is bottled at 50% ABV without chill filtration and contains no added coloring, presenting a golden straw to sienna yellow color. On the nose, peat and smoke are accompanied by salted caramel, fudge, vanilla, citrus including lemon and orange zest, floral notes of heather and thyme, seaweed, brine, charcoal, cereal grains, honey, and coconut.
The palate offers smoke, peat, and a creamy texture with salted caramel, vanilla shortbread, oak spice, peppery heat, soft sweetness, fruit including apple and apricot, herbs, and chocolate brownie. The finish features ginger biscuits, earthy peat, herbal tea, menthol notes, grilled apples, buttery pastry, spicy coffee bean, dark treacle, and lingering sweetness with medium to long duration.
Port Charlotte 10 Year Old was introduced as the flagship expression in 2018. The whisky is packaged in a distinctive dark green glass bottle with heavily embossed lettering on the rear and minimal recycled cardboard packaging.
The expression represents a balanced approach to heavily peated Islay whisky, with the French oak cask maturation contributing floral and fruity complexity.
This whisky is commonly enjoyed neat or with a small amount of water to open the flavor profile.
