Description
Fettercairn 40 Year Old is produced at the Fettercairn Distillery in the Highland region of Scotland. Established in 1824, the distillery features a distinctive copper cooling ring that cascades water down the stills during production, contributing to the character of the spirit.
The whisky is distilled and aged for 40 years with maturation primarily in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. Multiple releases have been produced with different finishing approaches. The 2018 release was distilled on 23 December 1977 and finished in Gonzales Byass Apostoles Palo Cortado sherry cask number 6, with approximately 35 years in ex-bourbon barrels followed by 5 years in sherry finishing. This release was limited to 818 bottles.
The 2024 release featured approximately 38 years in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels followed by over two years in first-fill ex-bourbon finishing, with 35 bottles allocated to the United States.The whisky is bottled at 48.9% ABV without chill filtration and contains no added coloring. On the nose, honey, molasses, ginger, toffee apple, thick treacle, sherry, leather, tobacco, prunes, figs, oranges, almonds, and nutmeg are present.
The palate offers liquorice, balsamic, citrus, raisin, toffee, honey, Demerara sugar, dark chocolate, and tropical fruits with a rich oily mouthfeel. The finish is long with soft spice, tropical fruits, wood, black pepper, nutmeg, and oranges.
Fettercairn 40 Year Old presents a deep amber color with rich golden highlights. The whisky is presented in wooden gift box packaging.
This whisky is commonly enjoyed neat to appreciate the complexity developed over four decades of maturation.
